What is a browser?

A browser is a piece of software that acts as an interface between the user and the inner-workings of the Internet, specifically the World Wide Web. Browsers are also referred to as web clients, or Universal Clients, because in the client/server model, the browser functions as the client program.

The browser acts on behalf of the user. The browser:

* contacts a web server and sends a request for information

* receives the information and then displays it on the user's computer
